Hosted by ARNO Council Member Lt Samuel Williams, the evening offered a dynamic, hands-on insight into how today’s Royal Navy officers are prepared to command and navigate some of the most sophisticated vessels in the world.
The state-of-the-art simulators, recently enhanced through a £27 million upgrade, now reflect the realities of 21st-century maritime operations with remarkable fidelity — from contemporary bridge layouts to immersive environmental scenarios that simulate every nuance of life at sea.
For many attendees, the visit stirred fond memories, particularly Lt Cdr John Pearson, who was delighted to spot his own PWO(N) course photograph from 1981 still proudly displayed from his days training in HMS Dryad.
Lt Williams expertly guided participants through a series of live demonstrations, including a live pilotage and Replenishment at Sea approaches, all while illustrating the modern methods used to train todays officers.
The evening was not only a fascinating glimpse into current training practices but also a poignant reminder that, despite all the technological evolution, the art and discipline of naval navigation remains central to the core functions of the Royal Navy
It was an enlightening and thoroughly enjoyable evening, warmly received by all. ARNO member Cdr Andrew Thompson said, “Sam Williams was a charming host and a very erudite and knowledgeable officer who made the visit really come alive; it was fascinating on a professional level but also hearing how the Navy has adapted to pressures and societal changes”
Sincere thanks go to Lt Williams, Lt Cockroft, and the entire team at the Navigational Training Unit and HMS Collingwood for their time, expertise, and exceptional hospitality.
