Cdr Graham Morgan Lloyd (Rtd) began his career in the Royal Navy in January 1944, when he entered the Royal Naval College at Eaton Hall, Chester. He served as a Midshipman aboard HMS Ajax at the end of the Second World War, a ship with a proud wartime record. During his time, HMS Ajax embarked Prime Minister Winston Churchill and the Foreign Secretary for the Yalta Conference, bearing witness events that would shape the post-war world.
Later, as a Lieutenant on HMS London, he was fired upon during the Yangtze Incident in 1949. He went on to serve aboard HMS Wizard and HMS Venus, before taking on various roles, including as a Lieutenant Commander and Staff Signal Communications Officer for the 6th Frigate Squadron, and as the Base Signal Communications Officer in Hong Kong. He also sailed with HMS Bermuda to Bermuda for the British Colony Anniversary celebrations.
He concluded his distinguished career in Malta as a Commander, serving as the Fleet Signal Communications Officer for the Mediterranean, before retiring from the Royal Navy in October 1966.
Beyond his military service, my Grandad has been a pillar of his local community in Pontypridd, particularly through his dedication to St. Catherine’s Church. The values of service and responsibility, which defined his years in uniform, have continued to inspire those around him.
Even as he celebrates his centenary, he remains incredibly active and independent. He still enjoys skiing in the French Alps and continues to live a full and vibrant life in Pontypridd. His determination, vitality, and enduring spirit are nothing short of extraordinary and serve as a source of inspiration to all who know him!
