Memories
"I was 2 years old on VE day. My father was Chaplain of HMS Caledonia, having previously served in the South Atlantic aboard the Dorsetshire and I remember the night of VE Day vividly. My parents woke me, wrapped an eiderdown around my shoulders and opened the bedroom window. There, below, was the most amazing scene of brightly lit ships and tugs, spraying their water cannons high into the air, to the accompaniment of a huge cacophony of ships’ sirens, while Corvettes joyfully whoop whooped as they zipped about in no particular direction. That scene is as clear in my memory as if it was yesterday"
Mrs Elizabeth Alder (Artus)
"On VJ day, I was in the Scilly Isles and all the children were taken to celebrate by the Navy in an MTB, around the Bishop Rock Lighthouse at full power"
