After a full career in the Royal Navy, retiring as a Vice Admiral and as the Second Sea Lord, Sir David was the Chief Executive of the Leeds Castle Foundation and Enterprises Limited between 2015 and 2020. In June 2020 he became Her Majesty’s Governor and Commander-in-Chief Gibraltar. He continues to embrace a broad range of other business and voluntary commitments, including as Chairman of Trustees or President of a broad spectrum of charities.  In 2014 he was honoured to be appointed a Deputy Lieutenant for Hampshire.
